Barreleye Fish
Hello… I am the Barreleye Fish, known as Macropinna microstoma. A quiet observer of a world where light fades into memory, I drift in a place most will never see.

My transparent, dome shaped head reveals what others keep hidden. My eyes, my thoughts, even fragments of my mind exist in plain view.

Where many fear the deep, I belong to it. The darkness is not empty. It is calm, silent, and full of mystery. Far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, between 600 and 800 meters, I exist in what humans call the twilight zone.

Here, sunlight dissolves before it arrives. The water is cold and still, and soft particles drift endlessly downward. You may call it marine snow, but to me it feels like slow falling stars.

I do not chase. I observe. Small gelatinous creatures float through my world. Tiny crustaceans pass like distant echoes. Larval fish drift without knowing they are seen.

Sometimes I take from the hunters themselves, from the glowing siphonophores that move like living shadows, carrying life within their reach. My tubular green eyes look upward into the dim blue darkness, watching silhouettes move across fading light. When the moment feels right, I turn my gaze forward and what was unseen becomes mine.

Life here is quiet, and even our beginnings are a mystery. It is believed we release life into the vast open water, letting eggs drift with the currents. Our young rise toward warmer layers, carried gently by the ocean, and over time they descend again into the deep. Into darkness, into stillness, into becoming.

One day they too will see the world through a transparent veil, just like me. Even now, much about us remains unknown, and every discovery is only a small light in an endless ocean.

Though I live far from your world, your world still reaches mine. The silence is disturbed, the waters are changing, and the fragile balance I depend on begins to shift.

I am rare, and rarity does not last forever. There is a chance my kind will disappear before we are truly understood.

So listen for a moment. Share my story and let it drift across your world like falling stars. Because even the unseen lives, hidden in the deepest waters, hold a place in the balance of everything. Thank you for hearing the voice of something you may never see.
